Uses of Emirates ID: 5 Perks Every UAE Resident Should Know

Your Emirates ID is far more than a card in your wallet. From cash withdrawals to airport e-gates, here's how to get the most out of it, and why it matters when you buy or rent property in Dubai.

If you live in the UAE, you almost certainly carry an Emirates ID.

It's a legal requirement for every resident and citizen, and for most people, it's simply the card they show when someone asks for proof of identity.

But the Emirates ID does much more than that. Issued by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), the card holds a smart chip that stores around 20 key details about you.

That chip connects you to banks, government services, healthcare providers and even the airport.

At Azora Property, we help clients relocate to the UAE every week, and getting the Emirates ID is one of the first milestones in that journey. Once it's in your hands, a lot of daily life becomes easier.

Here are five benefits many residents don't know about, plus why your Emirates ID plays such an important role in buying, renting and settling into a home in Dubai.

1. Withdraw cash from an ATM

Forgot your bank card at home? Depending on your bank, your Emirates ID may be all you need.

Several UAE banks let customers withdraw money using their Emirates ID, although each bank has its own rules, and you need to be a customer of that bank.

  • Emirates NBD: Customers can withdraw cash with their Emirates ID through the Emirates NBD mobile app. You generate a code in the app, then use it together with your ID at the ATM.

  • Mashreq Bank: Customers can open accounts, pay bills, update personal details, and withdraw or deposit cash by presenting their Emirates ID.

  • At a Mashreq ATM, your existing bank cards appear on screen, so you can choose between withdrawals, local and international transfers, chequebook requests and statements.

  • Al Hilal Bank: Emirates ID can be used for cash withdrawals and transfers at Al Hilal Bank ATMs.

It's a small convenience, but on a busy day it can save you a trip back home.

2. Pay for fuel at ADNOC stations

Your Emirates ID can also work as a payment method at the pump.

To use it, download the ADNOC Wallet app. Your Emirates ID is linked to your wallet, and you can top up your balance through the app. When you fill up at an ADNOC station, insert your Emirates ID into the card slot and follow the instructions on screen.

The same wallet also works at ADNOC Oasis convenience stores and ADNOC car washes. For anyone who drives regularly in the UAE, it's one less card to carry.

3. Use it as your health insurance card

Health insurance is mandatory for residents in Dubai, and most people receive a separate insurance card from their provider. But if you forget it on the way to the clinic, don't worry.

Medical providers can use your Emirates ID to look up and process your health insurance. Simply show your ID at reception, and the clinic can access your coverage details.

This is especially useful for families, as it reduces the number of cards parents need to keep track of for every family member.

4. Skip the queue at DXB with smart gates

Frequent travellers will love this one. Dubai International Airport (DXB) has smart gates, an automated border control system that uses facial recognition to identify travellers.

The gates connect to immigration databases, so they know whether you're a UAE national, a GCC national, a UAE resident or a visitor.

To use your Emirates ID at the smart gates:

  1. Register your Emirates ID with the relevant immigration authority (registration can be checked through the GDRFA Dubai website).

  2. At the gate, scan your Emirates ID.

  3. Look into the camera at the green light. Remove glasses and hats before you pass through.

For residents who travel often for business or to visit family abroad, smart gates can save a lot of time at arrivals and departures.

5. Unlock discounts across the UAE

Perhaps the most enjoyable benefit: your Emirates ID can save you money.

Many hotels, attractions, theme parks and restaurants across the UAE offer special rates for residents. Often, all you need to do is show your Emirates ID at the counter or enter your details when booking.

Staycations, summer deals and attraction tickets are some of the most common offers. If you're new to the UAE, it's worth always asking whether a resident rate is available. You may be surprised at how much you can save.

Why your Emirates ID matters for property in Dubai?

The benefits above make daily life easier, but for anyone buying, renting or relocating to Dubai, the Emirates ID is far more important than ATM convenience. It's the key that unlocks almost every step of setting up your home.

Opening a UAE bank account
Most banks require an Emirates ID to open a resident account. You'll need that account to pay rent, receive salary, pay service charges and, if you're buying, to apply for a mortgage.

Signing a tenancy contract and registering Ejari
In Dubai, every residential tenancy contract must be registered through Ejari, the official rental registration system. Tenants are typically asked for their Emirates ID as part of the process. Without a registered Ejari, connecting utilities and sponsoring family members becomes much harder.

Connecting DEWA
To activate electricity and water at your new home, you'll register with DEWA (Dubai Electricity and Water Authority). Your Emirates ID is part of the standard documentation.

Buying property and registering with the DLD
Non-residents can buy property in Dubai with a passport alone. But once you become a resident, your Emirates ID connects your property records, Golden Visa status and government services in one place. It also makes it easier to access services through Dubai REST, the Dubai Land Department's app, where owners can view title deeds and manage their properties.

Accessing UAE PASS
UAE PASS is the national digital identity app, linked directly to your Emirates ID. It lets you sign documents digitally and access hundreds of government services online, including many property and utility services. For investors who aren't always in the country, this can be a huge time saver.

Golden Visa holders
If you've received a UAE Golden Visa through property investment, your Emirates ID is issued as part of the process. It reflects your long-term residency status and gives you access to all of the benefits listed above.

In short, your Emirates ID isn't just proof of who you are. It's the foundation of your life in the UAE.

Tips to get the most out of your Emirates ID

  • Keep it valid. Your Emirates ID is linked to your residence visa. Renew it on time to avoid fines and service interruptions.

  • Update your details. If you move home, change your phone number or get a new passport, update your information so banks and government systems stay in sync.

  • Set up UAE PASS early. Once your ID is issued, activate UAE PASS. It will make almost every government interaction faster.

  • Register for smart gates. It takes a few minutes and can save you hours over a year of travel.

  • Ask about resident rates. Whether booking a hotel or buying attraction tickets, always check whether a resident discount applies.

  • Check your status online. If you're waiting for a new or renewed card, you can track its progress through the ICP website or app.
